How to Grow Beautiful Peonies in Your Garden

Herbaceous and tree peonies are the two main types. Herbaceous peonies die back in winter, while tree peonies have woody stems and bloom a bit later in the season.

Peonies are long-lived perennials that reward gardeners with lush blooms each spring. To plant them successfully, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a wide hole and enrich it with compost. For bare-root peonies, place the eyes (buds) no more than 1–2 inches below the soil surface—planting too deep may prevent blooming. Space plants 3–4 feet apart to allow air flow and room to grow. Water after planting and mulch lightly. Peonies prefer cold winters, so don’t worry if leaves die back in fall. With proper planting, peonies can thrive for decades with little care.

Proper plant care starts with consistent maintenance. Regularly check for pests, yellowing leaves, and wilting. Remove dead or damaged growth to promote healthy development. Keep the soil clean by removing debris, which helps prevent disease. Prune when needed to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Rotate indoor plants for even light exposure. Outdoors, mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Use garden tools that are clean and sharp to avoid spreading bacteria. A little routine care goes a long way in keeping plants vibrant, resilient, and beautiful throughout the growing season.
