Giardini Botanici Villa Taranto is one of the most famous botanical gardens in the world. These are located on the Shore of Maggiore Lake in the Pallanza province of Italy. It is a tourist attraction. People visiting Italy have this botanical garden on their visit list. From the month of April to the month of October, the place is completely packed with tourists. You could come and visit and get awestruck by the beauty of the garden.

It is also one of the largest botanical gardens in the world. It covers a path of nearly 7 km and is spread out in 16 hectares of area. The garden houses close to 20,000 plant variants, which covers over 3,000 species of flora. Some of the notable plants available here are azalea, Cornus and greenhouses, etc.

About Captain Neil Boyd McEacharn 

Captain Neil Boyd McEacharn created Giardini Botanici Villa Taranto. He was a Britisher born in London, England, in the year 1884. Firstly, he joined the British army in the King’s own Scottish borderers in the year 1911. Also, He has contributed his services during the first world war.

History of Giardini Botanici Villa Taranto

In 1931, Neil Boyd McEacharn a Scottish Captain a botany enthusiast bought the villa and the estate surrounding it from marquise Sant’Elia. Moreover, he started the work of revamping the entire estate and landscape by himself. Firstly, he cut down close to 2,000 trees and planted plants of different species from all corners of the world. Consequently, he reworked the landscape and added water features throughout the garden with eight km of pipes. 

It took him close to 9 years to complete the work of the entire garden and was ready by 1940. Likewise, his ancestors were the inspiration behind the name Villa Taranto. Furthermore, Napoleon gave his ancestor Dukedom. Finally, Giardini Botanici Villa Taranto is the name given to the garden.

Future Of The Garden

The is quite magnificent and very large for a single man to handle. Thus, Captain Neil Boyd McEacharn couldn’t maintain all by himself. In addition, he contemplated offering it to the Italian government for taking care of the garden further on. Also, after his death in the year 1964, NGO runs the entire state. Which undertakes the entire work of the botanical garden. Moreover, all the works pertaining to the gardern is under it.

The garden has more than 16 hectares on the western shore of the Maggiore lake. It is close to seven km in length. Furthermore, the garden has more than 80,000 blooming bulbous specimens. Be it any season, summer, spring, or fall; the garden has blooming flowers all over. People from far places come to see the beauty of this garden. 

Lastly, in the present time, the garden is open to visitors from the month of April to October. But, the villa is off-limits to the visitors. As it is the office of the prefecture of the province.
