A Proper Area For First Vegetable Garden

Are you a beginner in this field? Then it is wise to start in a small area. Pick a particular area where you will garden and prepare the soil. In the summer and spring, you need to water and weed the soil. Make sure the garden area gets a minimum of 7 hours of sunlight every day, and it is protected from heavy wind. It should have a proper drainage system and water supply.

Basic Tools For First Vegetable Garden

When you are gardening, you need some tools. The basic tools like shovel, hoe, rake, fork, and had trowel are appropriate for the beginners. As your experience will grow, you can buy the advanced tools. However, always purchase excellent quality tools because these will last long and make the gardening easier.

Mark The Boundary And Dig The Soil

First, make an appropriate boundary for your garden area. Then start digging the soil using a spade. You should dig a minimum of 12 inches deep; however, 18-24 inches should be ideal. If the soil is lumpy or there are rocks, get rid of them.

After the proper soil aeration and cleaning, spread some compost and level the area.

Collect Seeds And Plant Them

If you have thought that you will plant different seeds in the garden, then separate the area with proper demarcation. After that, buy the seeds and in each section plant different seeds. For beginners, the tomatoes, peas, corn, and beans are ideal. They grow easily. Choose a cloudy day for planting the seeds.

It is not mandatory to have straight rows. You can have staggered rows as well as raised beds for planting.

Companion Plants Are Must For First Vegetable Garden

You should plant some companion plants so that they can keep the pests at bay. Marigold is one of the most popular plants that remove pests. Moreover, if you plant basil near tomatoes, the tomatoes will have better taste and flavor.

Various herbs such as thyme, oregano, rosemary attract the bees easily.

Watering, Fertilizing And Weeding Properly

You need to water the garden area every day so that the seeds get the required water. Always water them in the early morning as this helps in keeping them well-moisturized. Do not water the seeds or young plants in the afternoon as this might shock them.

Once they are 4-6 weeks old, you need to give fertilizer to the soil. Weeding every day is necessary. Spare 20 minutes for gardening daily and you can do all the activities without fail.
