Some people don’t have the best track records when it comes to plants. So, when they heard that indoor cactus are perfect for beginners, their dream to become a bonafide gardener is rekindled.
However, if you’re serious about planting some indoor cactus, there are some things you need to know. Cactus is one of the easiest plants to grow. However, this doesn’t mean that there won’t be any challenges.
No matter the kind of plants you are trying to grow, life is no joking matter. With that, it is essential to master indoor cactus care. Here are five tips you’d want to keep in mind.
Indoor Cactus care tips
1. Know Your Location’s Angle
If you’re somewhere in the South or Northern region, then you’re in a lot of luck because there is plenty of sunlight in these areas, which is something that every indoor cactus needs for growth.
You might have guessed that the reason an indoor cactus can survive just fine without much watering is that it gets most of its nutrients and energy from the sun. In line with that, you would benefit if you live at parts of the country where there is an excess of it.
However, if you happened to live in locations like the West where there is more rain than sunshine, don’t worry because there are plenty of ways to make this work for you.
For one thing, you can purchase some LED lights to make up for days when there is no sunshine in your area. And be careful of overwatering because there won’t be enough sunlight to dry out your plants.
2. Don’t Feel Bad If You Are Unable To Give The Plants All Your Attention
Plants are living creatures too. So, we can’t blame you if there are times when you feel guilty about not being able to water them all the time.
But most of the time people I know that are too concerned about their plants are the ones who didn’t succeed with an indoor cactus plantation. The reason is that cactus needs more heat than water. So, if you water them all the time, it can either lead to a growth spurt or withering.
From our experience, the best way to care for cactus is to forget about them at certain times of the day. That doesn’t mean neglecting them. But after you water them, it wouldn’t hurt to forget about them for a while. Perhaps, you can engage with other activities instead of worrying about your cactus the whole day. When you get back, you’ll see that your cactus is already dried out and you are just in time to water them again.
3. Your Pots Should Have Drainage
Even though water is supposedly one of the primary needs of every plant, we all know that everything that is too much can be harmful. With that said, the last thing you want for your plants is to absorb too much water.
In line with that, you need to make sure that there is a drainage hole where the water can sip through. Otherwise, the water would remain in the roots of the plants for days which can eventually lead to plant illnesses.
4. Avoid Having To Re-Pot Your Plants From Time To Time
In some ways, plants are also like people. For one thing, just like us humans, they also like dwelling in their home for a long time.
Admit it. Who among you likes moving from one house to another every three months? We bet no one would even dare raise their hands.
Plants are precisely the same way. They need to keep their root system sturdy in one location so that they can grow strong and tall.
5. Design Your Cactus In Threes
If you were growing your garden outdoors, it would be an excellent idea to let them blend in with the other forms of greenery you have there.
But since that isn’t the case, you might as well think like a minimalist. With that, the best approach is to stack them in every corner in groups of three.
